When I was younger (pre high school graduation) I could RUN. No, not marathon status, but I was fast... I could sprint for distances. Probably nothing over 2 miles, but for not being on a running schedule, it was great. I have tried so many times to start some type of foot movement + pavement routine since then, and it was has failed, lasting only about 2 or 3 weeks. Four years out, I can say that I have started running.
It started in March and would only be a mile run at the most. Now, being early July, I can do 2.5 miles on a GREAT day.
Some rules for running that I have learned... don't give up. Push yourself during the run, even when your mind is telling you no.... (suddenly Bump & Grind started playing in my head). If you can still breath, and your legs are not shaking uncontrollably, then just push out that last quarter mile. Yes, taking a break is okay, but think about it before you start walking the rest of the way home.
Pinterest is great for motivation, however, know that you can restart the next day and don't hate yourself if you didn't reach your goal.
Keep a log! Seeing improvement is great.
Drink water, always.
Learn how to breath while running.
If I eat unhealthy the night before a run, my body lets me know.
DO NOT TAKE EXTENDED BREAKS. I am not comparing extended to a month. Not even a week. I would give it 3 days max.
With this being said... I need to follow my advice. This blog was created because last week I did a 2 1/2 mile run, took a 4 day break, and barely pushed out over a mile.
Having a running partner does help :)
